I'm at a loss on how to use Google Photos at all via Drive on Mac OS if I am still managing and uploading them to the Photos application. Sync photos to your device Select the Include videos checkbox to include videos when syncing from a folder or Photos library. You can upload and access all of your files, including videos. In the Finder on your Mac, select the device in the Finder sidebar. Now that we have to use Drive for Desktop I cannot find a way to make this happen again. See Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over Wi-Fi. When you added a new image to Photos Backup & Sync would grab it and get that uploaded into Google Photos at your quality of choice. It tossed all the folders and files and only grabbed the good stuff.

Previously on MacOS, Backup & Sync let you select the Photos Library folder to upload the entirety of the photo/video contents inside to Google Photos.
